The founder of Lagar de Bezana, don Ricardo Bezanilla, was very much in love with his Syrah vines, some of the first that were planted in Chile. Syrah has been thriving on our gravelly soils, and produces concentrated wines with an exuberantly rich and fruity character.
Don Ricardo considered Syrah to be his best wine, and his widow wants to honor this tradition by selecting the 15 best barrels of every vintage and bottle them separately. These barrels include several “demi-muids” or 600 litre barrels. These are larger than the standard 225 litre barrique, and allow for a slower and more graceful development of the wine, especially in warmer vintages. Occasionally, the addition of a little Mourvèdre to the final wine increases complexity of flavors.
